Moving out
About 2-3 years ago I found a website called DMD pathfinders, this site was aimed at adults with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The website has a lot of information about living with Duchenne and has some great people to get advice from. Since reading about other people with my condition living independent lives, I’ve wanted to live in my own home and have full control of my own life.
At the moment I live with the parents. Being 34 this is becoming harder and harder. Me and dad have completely different views on life and political believes, which leads to augments. He has a lot of control over my life, which I now see is the main cause of my anxiety. Because he thinks I’m vulnerable and should be looked after. This is really making me think my life is pointless, which is also why I’m getting depression. All my bothers will have all moved out of my parents house by the end of 2020. So living in a big 5 bedroom house with just me, mum and dad will make my mental health even worse. It’s also a expensive house to run, thats another reason for wanting to move.
Applying for social housing
In Sheffield you have to apply for social housing on the Sheffield property shop, run by the council. You get given a band based on your need for housing. I am currently waiting to finish my application to be put on the housing register and getting a band. This is being held because of covid-19. So it’s just a waiting game at the moment.
